Our approach
The Swedish translation for “Kompis” is friend. Much of what we are searching for often lies within, and we care deeply about providing space for anyone searching. People find meaning and growth when they allow their lives to be witnessed by another.
Therapy should feel right even when it feels hard. At Inner Kompis, our approach emphasizes a strong therapeutic alliance and utilizes evidence based strategies and tools. In addition, we hold the core belief that habitual thoughts and behaviors must be honestly examined and thoughtfully challenged in order to transform into personal growth and lasting change.
Safety. Curiosity. Honesty. Compassion.
Our therapeutic focus is specifically designed to walk a unique path with each client to meet the following goals:
Encourage open and curious exploration of anxiety, depression, trauma and grief to understand what is occurring now and determine a starting point of personal growth. Our goal is to take meaning from the past while staying firmly rooted in the present.
Question and redefine patterns of thought, behavior and cultural forces for greater awareness of current life status as well as future opportunities.
Redesign a more authentic life through supported experimentation of new behaviors and ideas leading to higher levels of self-knowledge and acceptance, i.e. happiness.

Jason D. Stevens, LCSW (Owner)
Therapy is a space where you can explore yourself and all of the intricacies that are you. It is a courageous endeavor that takes vulnerability, transparency, and accountability. Helping people discover more about themselves is work I am deeply passionate about. It’s a privilege to ally with you and help you determine for yourself the next best steps. I enjoy using a mix of modalities and interventions to encourage thoughtful reflection and growth with my clients. This approach is skills-focused and strength-based. I am most interested in what you want for yourself and how you envision therapy can help.
I approach each session with curiosity and encourage the same from my clients. All of my clients deserve a space to seen, encouraged, and challenged. I believe therapy is most meaningful when the process feels collaborative and open. I’m ultimately interested in whatever feels real and true to my clients. I want to help you steer hard into whatever makes life most meaningful to you.

Many people spend years longing to be understood. They want someone to make sense of their emotions, patterns, and those complicated parts of themselves.
I provide a validating, nonjudgmental space for clients to explore their emotions, understand their behaviors, and learn appropriate DBT skills to help them learn to regulate, cope, and build a life that feels meaningful while being grounded.
If you are looking for support, clarity, or skills to help you cope, I would love to connect. Together, we can explore finding what makes your life meaningful, unique, and worth celebrating.

What we explore…
-
Understanding how anxiety impacts our life is brave work. It takes introspection and vulnerability to examine our worries and their beginnings. It takes similar courage to decide how we allow anxiety to impact our life. I appreciate exploring this process with individuals who struggle with any range of anxiety disorders.
-
We feel privileged to speak with people who hold depression in their lives. Allowing yourself to be seen and understood can feel impossible when struggling with all of the barriers that depression can bring. This is why it is so important. We value exploring how life can be meaningful for others and helping people rediscover their OWN values. These are the conversations that help people feel seen and take on the next day.
-
Grief is a powerful and poignant season that we all experience. At Inner Kompis, we have often thought of grief as a necessary, yet painful friend. We benefit greatly when we can work through our grief and navigate it’s depth and complexity. We utilize multiple rituals and modalities as tools to help those who find themselves in such seasons.
-
Our faith, values, and personal beliefs provide depth to our experience and meaning to our journey. Many have found peace, purpose, and belonging in religious spaces. Many have found the opposite. Many have found both! Regardless of where your spirituality is today, we want to hear about it. We feel honored hearing our clients discuss beliefs they are adopting, evolving, or shifting away from. It is ALL growth. We enjoy fostering a space that is inviting and judgement-free. Uncertainty, doubt, and deep spiritual questions are all fair game here. Come discuss what you may be nervous to say out loud to the flock.
-
Navigating relationships, identity, and belonging can feel incredibly challenging. Our therapists care deeply about providing therapy to the LGBTQ+ community and have been honored to hear about the unique complexities this community faces. We focus on affirming care that helps individuals claim power and authority in who they want to be and who they want to be with.
-
We are not the expert. YOU are the expert regarding your own life and narrative you want to create for it. Narrative therapy re-frames the experiences you have as “stories” and can reduce the weight of negative emotions we carry. Narrative therapy helps us view negative behaviors and emotions through a lens of “something we hold” instead of “something we are”.
-
Much of what happens to us throughout our life is out of our control. Steady research demonstrates that trauma impacts every domain of the self (physiological, psychological, spiritual, etc.). At Inner Kompis, we try to be mindful in our approach toward those who have trauma in their life. Many tend to focus on what they have done. We are equally focused on what has been done to you and around you.
-
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are highly effective therapeutic approaches that provide valuable tools for individuals managing a wide range of mental health challenges. CBT focuses on identifying and restructuring negative thought patterns to improve emotional regulation and promote healthier behaviors. DBT, a specialized form of CBT, emphasizes mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness, making it particularly beneficial for those struggling with intense emotions and relationship difficulties. Together, these therapies equip clients with practical skills to enhance coping strategies, increase self-awareness, and foster long-term mental wellness.
-
ACT does not focus on symptom-reduction, nor does it focus on any direct attempt to fix or change what you feel. ACT focuses on helping you develop psychological flexibility and goals that align with your own values. ACT challenges one’s need to control and promotes a mindful approach in the next steps you want to take.
-
Every one of us fall into patterns of bias, prejudice, and ideological narrative. We’re wired to! It is how our brain functions to help us navigate our lives. The natural consequence, however, is that we can fall into an array of thinking errors (black/white thinking, catastrophizing, negative filtering, etc.). Critical thinking helps us examine our thoughts through the lens of a curious scientist. We navigate the variables that inform our thoughts/narratives and assess if they continue to benefit us.
-
Throughout the various populations we have worked with, we always return to a focus on one’s strengths. This approach helps people invest their emotional and cognitive bandwidth toward a mindset of growth. We want to help you understand what makes you amazing and uniquely “you”. Our goal in this is to help you find your own creative solutions when tackling any challenge life may present.

“I have been meeting with Jason Stevens for a bit over a year at this point, and I could genuinely not recommend him enough. This is a great welcoming place and he has helped through many a tough time. I would be shocked if anyone ever had a bad experience with him. Genuinely the most confident 5 stars I can ever give.”
